Recommendations from Dr. Jones

1.             Can potential students contact you for a meeting or lesson before an audition?

This is highly recommended and encouraged. Personality, commitment, and intellectual curiosity are part of becoming a good musician. Having time to get to know one another is important to assess these qualities. Reviewing repertoire choices and talking over future plans can also help the student feel more prepared and more comfortable when coming to the audition. It also gives us both a chance to see if our personalities will mesh and if the student feels that this flute studio is a good fit for them.

2.             What type of repertoire should undergraduate candidates prepare for an audition?

Those applying for admittance into the undergraduate program should be prepared to play two solos of contrasting styles that demonstrate the applicant’s tone, vibrato and expressive capabilities and also display a command of technique and articulation. The time allotted is usually about 10 minutes for solo material and 3-4 minutes of scales and sight-reading. The minimum requirement for scales is major scales up to four sharps and four flats, two octaves, slurred and tongued.

3.             What type of repertoire should graduate candidates prepare for an audition?

Graduate applicants should prepare three contrasting solos that demonstrate tone, technique, musicality and interpretation. Recommendations include standard concerti, French repertoire, Baroque Sonatas and standard 20th century sonatas or solos. Possible suggestions include Mozart Concerti, Enesco Cantabile et Presto, Gaubert Nocturne and Allegro Scherzando, Bach Sonatas, Poulenc Sonata, Prokofiev Sonata, and Martinu Sonata. Orchestral excerpts should include a minimum of three excerpts of contrasting styles from the standard orchestral repertoire. Suggestions include Brahms Symphony No. 4, Ravel Daphnis and Chloé, Prokofiev Peter and the Wolf, Mendelssohn Scherzo and Beethoven Leonore Overture.  All major and minor scales plus arpeggios are required. Students are encouraged to contact me if they would like input on their choices.

4.             What are other considerations students need to know before an audition?

Prospective students should perform repertoire that is appropriate for their level of ability and displays their best playing qualities. It is also important to present oneself in a professional manner by dressing appropriately for the audition and being ready to speak to the audition panel about future plans.
